Lesvos is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea, often called Mytilene, after its capital. The third largest island in Greece possesses a rare natural beauty, architectural marvels, a petrified forest and medieval fortress towns. The use of the term lesbian derives from the poems of Sappho, who was born in Lesbos and who wrote with powerful emotional content directed towards other women.
